Matinee all’Opera, AIDA by Giuseppe Verdi, March 3, 2013

Once again, Circolo Italiano goes to the opera presenting this time Aida, by Giuseppe Verdi.  As you may already know, 2013 is not only the year the Italian Government has proclaimed to be “The Year of Italian Culture in the United States” but it is also the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth.  Buon Compleanno, Maestro!

And now a short synopsis of the opera.  Aida, an Ethiopian princess, is captured and brought to Egypt as a slave. As the top Egyptian military commander, Radamès struggles  between his love for her and his loyalty to the Pharaoh. To complicate the story further, Radamès is also loved by the Pharaoh’s daughter Amneris, although he does not return her feelings.  With this type of love triangle, things cannot end well.  But what a wonderful musical journey it is for all of us passionate opera lovers!
